Site Listings Vs. Indexing, The Truth
Every once and a while I get a little bugged about the difference between site listings versus indexing. The difference is not just the nomenclature of the English language but far greater than that. The simple reason is that many marketers would have you believe that they are one in the same, but they are definitely not.
I bring this up because some marketers actually sell you on getting your site “indexed within 48 hours,” when in fact it will be indexed almost automatically within the same period of time by Google, Yahoo and MSN Live. Site indexing is the process of having your site “crawled” by a search engine spider. In the case of Google it’s Googlebot. Most times you can see the spider visits in your site logs. If your hosting account doesn’t provide log stats you should consider getting a better hosting account. Site indexing is very close to being automatic and should take place within first 48 hours of your site going online.
Getting your site to come up in the search results pages is a completely different issue, and one that some unscrupulous marketers push to the limits bordering outright fraud. Strong words but it really bothers me when I see it taking place. For the record: Search results listings are the listings that come up for keyword searches within a search site. For example if you enter “bass fishing gear” in the search bar on Google, the result is a number of sites that come up in the “organic” results of the search. Organic results are the listings that appear on the left hand side of the search listings below the paid listings that are directly on top in a lightly shaded and directly to the right in a vertical column.
These organic listings are tied to specific keywords associated with your site. It can take weeks or months for your keywords to rank within the search engine organic results. This part of the listing process is referred to as Search Engine Optimization and is a wholly and completely different process that can fill volumes on tactics ranging from keyword placement through website content.
So when you see an ad that says “get listed in Google within 48 hours,” don’t waste your money. You can do that part of it yourself. Instead search for SEO advice and assistance within the search engines.

Work From Home Ideas - Taking Surveys
There are a lot of ways to earn an income or supplement an existing one by working part time from home. One of the fastest ways is to join a surveys group. I’m sure that you have seen these types of ads on the Internet about earning money for shopping or reading ads or a number of other activities revolving around the survey business. Most of these are legitimate however that’s not the issue. Do your research well as it could take you a long time to make any serious money.
There isn’t anything wrong with taking surveys for money, however the issues lie in the details. If you have done any research you pretty much know that surveys for pay require you to take surveys and submit the results. The more surveys you take the more you make. Sounds as if you are industrious you can make a lot of money. Here are some facts:
- Not all surveys pay well. Some only pay a few dollars others pay more. The chief complaint I have heard is there aren’t enough of the $50 and $75 range.
- Focus Groups pay well but it’s a commitment of time, several hours as well as transportation. Make sure you check out all of the details.
- Reading emails – This can really eat up a lot of time and the pay per email may only be a few cents. Once again ask about the details.
There are several companies that are well known that aren’t scams. Three that I’m aware of are Survey Scout, they have been around since 2003. Paid Surveys, Also has been around for a while and Taking Surveys one of the newer ones but the buzz is good.
Stick with the well known entities and you should be okay. You just need to know what you are in for before you join up and make a commitment.

Site Designing for Your Niche
A common mistake that many web site owners make is “over designing” their sites. Let’s use a fictitious example of a classic car replacement parts website as a case in point. This company has been in business for 10 years and they enjoy a strong catalog following. They want to increase their sales and expand their business by utilizing the Internet as an additional sales platform. Although not necessarily a home business per se, but a small family owned business that has been highly successful in offering post-war classic car replacement parts. The time has come to expand or stagnate.
The company begins to research web site designers and settles on one that has an impressive portfolio. Lots of flash animation and state-of-the-art design technique. After many weeks of information gathering of product photos and data, design meetings and cost discussions a site is born. It’s even been optimized to rank well with the search engines.
The site has been indexed by the major search engines and receives a modest amount of traffic. The site designer assures them that it takes time to get correctly listed and rank well in the search results pages for their top keywords. Almost a year has passed and there is no appreciable increase in sales. The cost to build and maintain the site has not paid for itself.
Should they abandon the site and revert back to a catalog only business? The answer is no, no and no!
What they need to do is understand their internet customer base better. Here’s what I would suggest as a consultant.
1. Immediately install site tracking software. This can be accomplished for free by using Google© Analytics which is part of creating an AdWords© account. This is pretty simple stuff. You get coding from Google and place it on every page of your site.
2. Create a keyword Advertising program through Google or Yahoo Marketing. This will help to drive traffic to the site and at the same time should help to defray some of the site costs.
3. Allow enough time to analyze site visitors. Another words, wait.
Let’s say that by doing the above there is a large enough of a sample to analyze. What did we find?
A. There were hundreds of clicks that landed on the home page or the specific landing page but were abandoned right there. They never bought.
B. The sample showed that many viewers had lower resolution screens, older browser and older flash versions. This is important because of the flash animation on your site. Also the new versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox and Google Chrome have many of these supporting features built in.
C. Viewer loyalty was low (They didn’t come back) and average site time was very low as well as page depth (the total number of pages viewed.)
D. There was a high level of abandonment for those that did want to buy, but got to the shopping cart and then aborted before finalizing the sale. ( a form of buyers remorse)
This not what you want to see on a site that sells products that people need and want to buy, why else would they come to the site?
Why did so many viewers drop out after viewing the home page? Let’ see if we can make some sense of it all. You know that buyers want your products because they have bought from your catalog very successfully. Then why didn’t they buy from your site?
A possible and likely reason for some of the short stay issue could be in the site design. Sometimes simple is better. The reason is not everyone’s computer has the latest operating, Internet and Flash software. Your site might not show well in older browser versions and consequently any scripting may cause additional problems. This is not to say that your potential customer is backward it may just mean that they have older computers and operating systems that won’t display well. Many viewers get spooked right away if there are any oddities on a site.
Also consider that some one running and older Pentium PC or an older version of a Mac your site with all of its Flash and graphics may take a long time to load. This discourages customers as well and is a deterrent to viewing your site. It’s important to understand your customer base first and then add some bells and whistles later. So what is the answer?
Begin by creating a simpler site that is easy for anyone to get around. After all your primary purpose is to open up your market and sell more products to a larger audience.
Make sure you are set up with some analytical software to evaluate your site. Google Analytics is a great choice because it can tell you so much about your viewers and buyers. It even has a function to understand all of the steps someone took before they bought one of your products. This is done through a function called goals and it is a powerful feature to this free service.
In closing, the smart choice is to start out slow and simple and be in the position to analyze everything that goes on in your site.

Deals Galore, But Watch Out
It’s times like these that bring the best and worst of everyone out. That is to say when the economy is in the cellar there are a plethora of business opportunities available but be careful. The old adage, “if it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is.” In this tough economy we currently face one thing is for sure, everyone is looking for that special opportunity that will help them through the tough times ahead. Unscrupulous marketers know this and play to one’s weakness and in some cases desperation. Don’t let it happen to you.
How can you protect yourself. If you come across an opportunity that seems too good to pass up do the following:
Research: If the offer has a website go to that website and read through the entire offer being sure to check terms and conditions and income disclaimers.
Whois Lookup: Go to http://www.whois.net/ and look up the domain of the site that offers the opportunity. You can determine where the site is based. Important to know if you are dealing with a company based in your own country or not, especially if they guarantee your money back if you aren’t satisfied.
Google it: Go to Google and search for information on the product. For example if the product name is “Mega-Millionaire” put the name first in quotes and then without quotes in the Google search bar. Do the same in Yahoo and MSN Live or as many search sites you care to. Remember it’s your money, be careful how you spend it.
Last words: Don’t buy on impulse. Be sure to employ the three steps above first, don’t just part with your money. There are a lot of legitimate offers for making money, not everyone is out to get you but it pays to be prudent and to look before you leap.
An example of a legitimate program is the affiliate program for a known company. First off it doesn’t cost you a penny to join a legitimate affiliate program, however the best ones will provide you all of the marketing materials you need to sell their products. Your expenses are incurred in how you advertise those affiliate products. For additional information on affiliate programs you can go to our section on Affiliate Marketing.
Good luck.

Is Your Domain Name SEO Friendly?
The selection of a domain name has become very important in the bid for search engine placement. This article discusses the reasons why.
Search engine optimization and domains
When you first start an Internet business one of the first items on the list, after you’ve written your business model, is getting a domain name. In years past it wasn’t as difficult to find a decent name for your site. Today however, it’s not as easy to get your dot com name. The process of registering a name has improved substantially but the availability for descriptive names is far more difficult. Why is this a problem you may ask? It’s more of a problem for small and home business sites than it is for larger companies. The reason is simple and I can sum it up in one word: money.
Larger companies, especially public companies have the funding to advertise their new sites, therefore they don’t really need to have names that reflect the type of business they are in. I can site a perfect example, Go Daddy.com, has absolutely nothing to do with the type of business Go Daddy is in. But being the largest register of domain names, GoDaddy can advertise on all media levels to get business including buying advertising time on the Super Bowl! If you are starting a home based business on the Internet, I’ll bet that you won’t be buying time on television not to mention next year’s Super Bowl.
Okay, where am I going with all of this? You are on a limited budget when you start your business and you must rely on free traffic to your site, because without traffic you have no business. This is what I described in my article on organic traffic a few weeks ago. In order to get substantial traffic to your site you’ll need to have an optimized site. This all has to do with keywords and something called keyword density. You achieve this by having your most important keywords dispersed throughout your website and your domain name. (See I did come to the point of this article.)
Most SEO, search engine optimization, programs first look at the domain name and your major keywords. They look to see if your domain name and site title have any commonality. If they do your site receives extra points in the SEO algorithm, (a logical step-by-step procedure for solving a mathematical problem in a finite number of steps, often involving repetition of the same basic operation.) I hope that I haven’t lost you here because all of this is very important, especially to home based Internet business owners.
Most SEO programs will constantly refer back to the domain name and those words which match the dominate keyword phrases that you have chosen. When your site is optimized, search engines will pick up your scent, so to speak, and you will have great placement and positioning on searches that have your keywords. All of this amounts to substantial traffic.
I’m not an expert on SEO and I don’t pretend to be but I’ve spent my share of time in attempting to understand it and how it effects my site. I can recommend two areas that I think are beneficial to you: Web Site Design and Search Engine Optimization. There are a lot of submission services as well. Some of them are good and some of them are not so good. Try to optimize first.

Make Money At Home Without Spending A Dime, In Four Steps
If you are looking to make a few dollars at home but your budget won’t allow you to spend any money, this article is for you. I outline a simple four step process that can get you up and running within an hour for no cost outlay.
You probably have heard about ClickBank or PayDotCom, two major sites that represent thousands of products, mostly digital downloads, in literally hundreds of different categories. Either of these two sites costs zero to join as an affiliate. The concept that I’m sharing with you is simple.
Find a niche that you are interested in promoting, better still, make sure that it’s a popular one by doing some research on your own. Then promote the products for free.
1) Find out what people are searching for.
The free Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/T5/intl/en/index.html) and can be loaded on to the Internet Explorer and Firefox browsers. This little tool is handy and here’s how you can use it. Let’s say that you are interested in golfing as a niche but you want to know what specific golf items people are searching for. Type the word golf into the Google Toolbar and it will immediately provide you with suggestions for your search term based on current searches. So now you can get a picture of what specific golf information people are looking for. You can also use free keyword software to help you understand how popular a specific search term is from Good Keywords http://www.goodkeywords.com/
2) Sign Up with ClickBank or PayDotCom.
Now you need a product to sell. ClickBank and PayDotCom are two reliable sources on the Internet to look for products to sell as an affiliate. Go to www.ClickBank .com to sign up free as an affiliate or www.PayDot Com.com to sign up free to become a PayDotCom affiliate. If you are interested in PayDotCom you will also need to sign up with PayPal signing up with PayPal is also free. There are other sites that are free as well such as Kolimbo, http://www.kolimbo.com/
Shareasale, www.shareasale.com or the Google Affiliate Network. For the time being try the ClickBank and PayDotCom first then you can progress on to the others.
3) Get a free Blog.
It’s important to have your own website when you are promoting affiliate products because it gives you an opportunity to “pre-sell” the product before your customer goes to the official product website. Additionally it’s important because in step 4 (below) you will want to submit your articles to the most popular article directories and the top directories will not allow you to have a “self-serving” type link that does not directly go to a site that you own or manage. You can get your free blog at Blogger https://www.blogger.com/start which is owned by, guess who, Google. You also have the WordPress option at http://wordpress.com/ which is also a free blog with a lot more flexibility in design. Neither of these requires you to have a website or domain.
4) Start Promoting.
Some people may tell you that promotion is the biggest and most important issue in making any money on the Internet. I would agree and I will also add that it’s by far the most costly issue you have in promoting a product, however I’m going to share a simple concept with you that will get you on the road to making money as an affiliate. It’s called article marketing and it’s very easy to do. Once you have picked a product or products to sell based on your research above you can promote it/them by writing articles. One of the best ways to do this is to write a “lite” review about the product. You can get research information on the product by going to the product site or just Googling the product. Make sure you put at least 300 to 500 coherent words together about your product. Remember that you should not hard-sell your product because it’s a turn-off to the reader. Your article should be informative such as “did you know that product A has the following features and that many users have found that they can now do X.” The more you can entice people to look beyond your article and click on your site for more information the better off you will be in making a sale. Once you get the reader to click on your blog link now you have a targeted potential buyer. Use this opportunity to create excitement about your product and why the reader needs it and should buy it.
Since all of this has cost you $0 you can start to promote more than one product at a time. Remember that picking products to sell requires some work on your part. The more research and targeting you can do the better off you will be and the more successful you will be as well.
Once you have started to make some money you can slowly start to acquire more advanced tools to help you. You will find many of these tool at our Specialty Software Guide.
Good luck
