DL Guard

DL Guard saved me a lot of money.  You see, I write and publish eBooks about small and home business.  My very first eBook was released in 1998.  It did fairly well in terms of sales.  One day I checked my stats and saw that the ebook had been downloaded well over 100 times.  Well you can imagine how excited I was, I was finallt going to hit the big time.  I said to myself, this isn’t nearly as hard as I was told, in fact it’s pretty easy.  I checked my Clickbank account and found that it was zero for the day.  Perhaps there’s a lag in the update process?  But ClickBank operates in realtime, what’s going on?

I made several calls and talked to someone at Clickbank and found out that indeed there were no sales for that day for my ebook.  My heart sank to my stomach because I then realized what had happened.  Someone “hacked” into my site and not only downloaded my ebook free of charge but gave the link to several friends who gave to several friends, and you get the picture.  My ebook was now a freebie posted on someone’s blog as a free download.  The problem with a PDF is that, at least for now, you can’t generate a unique ID for easch user to unlock their copy of the eBook.  The dilema is, if you put your ebook on your server under a “Thank You” page or some other generic term it can be hacked.

What can be done?  Well for starters you can use a a different file name and change it on a daily basis.  That’s a big pain because you have to change it at ClickBank or PayDotCom or whoever you use as your payment processor each time as well.  There are fulfillment sites that will securely distribute your ebook for you, but they are pretty expensive.  So I decided to do some research on my own and I found DL Guard.

What does DL Guard do?  DL Guard is a service that loads onto your server and creates a layer between your ebook and your customer by encrypting the file name each time it’s downloaded.  It’s kind of like a download manager that you own on your own site.  It’s a one time purchase that’s less than $200.  It’s actually three different products in one: A secure download manager, a secure shopping cart and asecure membership site manager.

I’m clearly not doing justice to this product because it does so much for a fraction of the cost of other solutions to this problem. Since I installed DL Guard on my site I haven’t had one issue with unauthorized downloads for any product including software and other digital information products.

I am not sure what the current price is but it’s substantially less than $200 or even $150 USD. If you are selling digital information downloads this is a top notch product with great features at a reasonable cost. I find the support to be top notch as well.
