Internet Tax And The Home Based Business
I have been writing for some time on the consequences of Internet taxing by the states. It will effect all retail large and small. The Internet has been the last place that a small home based business business could actually flourish without all of the nonsensical restraints and costs of a brick and mortar retail store. The threat is significant because it’s forcing large retailers, like Amazon, to consider discontinuing their affiliate programs. If any large retailers start cutting their programs most assuredly smaller businesses will follow, and in the end the states will actually get less revenue than before the tax. Internet Tax - Will It Affect Your Home Business?
It still seems unclear, to me at least, how the new Internet tax law in New York and perhaps now in California will affect online affiliate marketing. It would appear that if an affiliate refers a product sale in New York to a New York based customer, the customer must be charged the sales tax. That has always been the case but under the new law any products sold by an affiliate of any company in or outside of New York to a New York address must be charged the sales tax. My understanding is that the product seller, not the affiliate, must collect the sales tax. This would apply to any company from any state selling products in New York or California.
