Can Product Reviews Be Unbiased?
Is it possible for a product review to be unbiased when the author or review site is an affiliate? It’s a dicey question and one that really requires rationale to be answered honestly. So I’ll answer for myself. On our site we review a number of products and services for the home based online business. Our reviews are meant to be unbiased enlightenment for each of the products, that is, does this product really do what it says and can I make money using the product or do I really need this product? The answers to these and other questions are found in our reviews. Readers have the option of buying a product with commentary from a third party user, not a paid advertiser or another marketer. The difference may seem inconsequential but in reality it really isn’t.
When I review a product for my site I have used it extensively and most importantly I have purchased it without a discount from the developer and marketer of the product. I am speaking from the perspective of a user not as a marketer. That in my mind is a big difference. For example, recently I was the affiliate for an analytic product from a major marketer. My personal experience with the product was abysmal, I immediately pulled the service from my reviews and stated plainly that our site could no longer recommend the service. Many marketers would continue to sell it because it had a very well known name associated with it and could potentially still make money from it. In my reasoning that’s downright dishonest.
So my answer to the top question is yes I think I can be unbiased, in my product review, as an affiliate of a product.
